Sweepy & Tody Alternative for Families: Track the Work, Not Just the Dirt

Sweepy and Tody track how dirty your rooms are. Chore-List tracks who did the work - and pays them for it. If your cleaning app knows the bathroom is overdue but can’t get your kids to care, this is the family alternative: a per-person chore board with dollar values, free household sharing included.

Two different models of “clean”

Tody’s idea is need-based: rooms accumulate dirtiness over time and surface when they need attention. Sweepy works room by room too, with cleanliness status, schedules per member, and a leaderboard - with household sharing behind its Premium tier ($19.99/year or $3.99/month). Both are genuinely good at cleaning rotas for adults and roommates. Neither pays anyone, keeps a balance, or runs a rewards store - because neither was built for the family problem: motivating kids.

Where the cleaning apps are genuinely better

If your household is adults or roommates dividing cleaning scientifically - flexible intervals, dirtiness curves, per-room status - Tody and Sweepy are purpose-built for it and Chore-List won’t model a room’s “dirtiness” for you. Chore-List wins when the question changes from “how dirty is it?” to “who’s doing it, and what’s in it for them?”

Frequently asked questions

Can adults and roommates use Chore-List, or is it only for kids?

Adults are first-class: every adult is an admin with their own list, and plenty of households run the board just for grown-ups - splitting recurring housework with balances settling into whoever-cooks-tonight trades. Kids are where the rewards store shines, but nothing requires them.

Is there a free Sweepy alternative that shares with the whole household?

Yes - Chore-List is free while in beta, and sharing is the core model: every member has their own list and login, the board is visible to the whole family, and the kiosk puts it on a shared wall screen at no cost.

Do recurring chores work like a cleaning rota?

Mostly: set a chore to recur daily, weekly, or monthly with a due time, assign it to a person, and it regenerates and pays every occurrence. What Chore-List doesn’t do is interval-by-dirtiness scheduling - a chore appears on its schedule, not when a room crosses a grime threshold.

Can I rotate chores between people?

Chores are assigned per person or posted to the Open Chores pool, where anyone can claim them - which handles rotation organically: the jobs are there, the family divides them, and the claimer earns the pay.

What does the board show at a glance?

Each person’s list groups their chores into Overdue, Due Today, and Upcoming, with their photo and current balance on top - the state of the house and everyone’s earnings on one screen.
